What's Behind The Sermon On The Mount?
It's a great question. If we can figure this out, we understand the meaning of Jesus' sermon.
What did God want from Adam and Eve? A heart of love and devotion. What did God want when Noah built the Ark? Same thing. What about Abraham? What did God want from Abraham? The same, love and devotion.
What does God want from us? Love and devotion. That's what the Sermon on the Mount is all about. We often take the verses of His teaching and treat them as individual paragraphs with corresponding present-day sermons.
But Jesus, of course, preached heart from Old Testament teachings. Look at it from all three chapters. They're all about the heart. What's behind the Sermon on the Mount? Love and devotion.
