How Do I Calm Myself?Philippians 4:6

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.

Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

How do we calm ourselves when there’s a worrisome situation? Philippians 4:6-7 has the answer.

  1. First thing, PRAY. Praying is asking God for your needs, and it’s the solution to your anxiety. First-century Christians were under extreme difficulty. The Jews didn’t like them. The Romans didn’t want them either. There was strong persecution at every crossroad. Being a Christian then was dangerous. So why did they hold to their faith? They believed and trusted in God for all things. Why did they do that? The word about Jesus was in their hearts. They lived in a much more difficult time than we do. If you don’t trust God now, when will you trust Him?

  2. Then, give Him THANKS. Think of all the things He has done for us, physically and spiritually. It’s hard to ask God for something when we’re not thankful for what He has provided. Documents show that food was often scarce for Christians back then. What was their solution? Prayers of thanksgiving.

  3. Note the RELEASE The PEACE. We realize the peace that comes from giving all of ourselves to the Lord, in prayer and with great gratitude. You can’t feel the peaceful release unless you truly believe He’s going to help.

If I may offer these words:

Ways to Build the Habit

  • Set reminders: Put Philippians 4:6-7 on your phone lock screen and in your vehicle for a week.

  • Pray in the moment: When stuck in traffic, waiting for bad news, or lying awake at night—use those as triggers to pray instead of worry.

  • Keep a thanksgiving list: Write down 3–5 things you’re thankful for each day. It trains your mind for the “with thanksgiving” part.

  • Memorize the verses: Say them to yourself when anxiety hits—it becomes a quick weapon.

  • Combine with breathing: Inhale while silently saying “Lord, I give You my worry,” exhale saying “Thank You for Your peace.

——-

In summary, don’t trust yourself to solve insolvable problems. Rely on the Lord for everything in your life. Everything? Yes. Everything.

He is our life, now and forevermore.
