Satisfying the Longing SoulPsalm 107:9
“For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.”
We all carry a deep, persistent longing inside—a hunger that no amount of success, relationships, entertainment, or even good intentions can fully quiet. In the busyness of life, we chase after things that promise fulfillment: a new goal, a perfect relationship, financial security, or the next big experience. Yet, time and again, the satisfaction fades, leaving us emptier than before.
Psalm 107 is a song of thanksgiving for God’s steadfast love and deliverance. The refrain repeats: “Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!” (vv. 8, 15, 21, 31). In the midst of human distress, God steps in—not with temporary fixes, but with soul-deep satisfaction.
The longing soul: This is the soul that yearns, thirsts, and aches for meaning, purpose, love, and wholeness. It’s the emptiness Augustine described: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”
The hungry soul: Like physical hunger, this is an urgent need. God doesn’t ignore it; He fills it with “good things”—His presence, grace, truth, peace, joy, and eternal hope.
Jesus echoes this truth in the New Testament:
“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst” (John 6:35).
“If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink” (John 7:37).
The pattern is clear: God alone satisfies what the world cannot.
Practical Steps to Let God Satisfy Your Soul
Acknowledge the hunger — Be honest: What are you chasing that isn’t satisfying? Name it before God without shame.
Turn to the Source — Spend intentional time in His Word and prayer. Feast on Scripture like daily bread.
Release the substitutes — Identify idols (things we turn to for fulfillment) and surrender them. Ask: “Does this draw me closer to God or distract me?”
Cultivate gratitude — Like Psalm 107’s refrain, thank God daily for His goodness. Gratitude shifts focus from lack to abundance.
Seek community — Share your longings with trusted believers. God often satisfies through His people.
Summary:
In a world full of noise and fleeting pleasures, choose the quiet act of coming to Jesus. He satisfies—not partially, but completely.
